How to Register a Domain
Needing to know how to register a domain? Let me quickly explain. First, let me congratulate you on taking the first required step in creating a new website or blog. It all begins with your very own domain name.
Where do I Register a Domain Name?
In order to register a domain name of your own, you will need to set up an account with a domain register. There are many available, and most offer the same range of services. (***Click here to see the company I use.***)
How do I Choose an Appropriate Domain?
Before registering your domain you will need to decide what kind of domain you want. Do you want a .com, .net, .biz, etc? Take a moment to really think about what name you want. Several considerations include branding and differentiation. If you have an established brand, then it would make sense to register a domain name that includes at least a portion of your brand name. If not, try using words that describe what you offer. Ex. If you are a CPA in Atlanta offering accounting services, you might want to consider something like AtlantaCPAFirm.com or CPAinAtlanta — get the idea? It is especially helpful to use geographic modifiers if you run a locally based business.
How do I Reserve a Domain with a Domain Registrar?
Once you open your account with your domain registrar of choice, simply do a search for the name you want. Once you find the domain name you want you can add it to your cart and checkout just as you would do if you were buying a physical product. Important! — Make sure you check the name for spelling before checkout. Once you submit payment and checkout you will soon receive an email confirmation along with details regarding your domain and how to access your account. Keep this email handy, you will need it later.
What if the Domain Name I want is Taken?
The most common domain extension is the .com. As a result, it is quite likely that the domain name you have in mind may already be taken. If that’s the case, you can opt for a .net, .biz or other type using the same name. Better yet, try thinking of a related word or phrase or add a modifier. Ex. If bluewidgets.com is not available, try bluewidgetsonline.com or shopbluewidgets.com. I personally prefer to do this rather than to register a .net, .biz or other extension of a domain name that has already been registered as a .com.
What do I do After I Register my Domain?
Getting your domain name is pretty simple. Most people find it easy to do and fairly straight forward. It’s the hosting setup that confuses most beginners. In order to get your website up, you will need to get a hosting account. Once you open a hosting account, you will log into your domain registrar account and “point” your domain to the host’s server. Don’t worry, it’s actually quite simple if you can follow simple directions.
